The goal of ProjectTREE (Technology Recycling for Excellence in Education) is to foster technology education in K-12 schools by providing computer hardware and software to interested schools and classrooms for a fraction of the cost.
Classes are provided with Internet capable laptops and desktops, donated by industry, along with a suite of open-source software to enhance inquiry-based student research and learning in areas of reading, language, science, mathematics, and social studies.
Hardware Recycling
The intent of ProjectTREE is to leverage existing sources of surplus and legacy hardware to provide equipment which is still able to meet the needs of students and educators alike. Sources can include, but not be limited to, corporate and industry donors and state and federal hardware donation programs. Hardware is tested, upgraded where necessary, fitted with the needed software packages, and bundled into appropriate configurations to provide maximum benefit to students. Computer labs are networked using a thin-client architecture, which allows older computers to be reused effectively as thin clients. The K12 LTSP server console which comes bundled in Edubuntu Linux is specifically tailored for effective classroom management.
Open-source Software
The cost of multiple-seat software licenses makes computer technology financially prohibitive for many school systems. ProjectTREE makes extensive use of open-source software, such as Edubuntu Linux, OpenOffice, FireFox, GIMP, WorldWind, and other open-source applications.
